What's in a Bottle of Wine?
'Should I order wine by-the-glass, or a bottle? Is that enough for 5 people? A buck-an-ounce or a $6 glass?’ So many questions, so little wine…
The short of it, a standard restaurant wine pour is 5 ounces (though at home, you're more likely pouring 7-9 ounces of wine). Some restaurants will pour 6 ounces, and other restaurants will give you a 9 ounce option. A bottle of wine is 25.4 ounces, so about 5 glasses of wine. Which means a buck-an-ounce is actually $25 a bottle, or $5 a glass.
What's a Good Wine Deal in Toronto?
Full disclosure, I’m no wine sommelier. I enjoy wine with my meals, but also look for affordable, palatable wines at the lower end of the price range whenever possible. Considering your typical restaurant markup for wine is usually 200-300%, a $15 bottle at the liquor store can cost upwards of $50 when dining out.
I get it, restaurants need to cover glassware, staff wages, rent, inventory and storage, but they also need a steady flow of paying costumers. So when I see anything under 100% markup, it's a great deal!
Wine Specials
1. House Wines: Should NOT be automatically classified as poor quality. It just means there is strong inventory, are ordered regularly, and does not need to be sourced or carefully stored, which means a lower markup.
2. Daily Specials & Happy Hours: Restaurants will typically have a lower (50-100%) markup to attract early birds, night owls or to fill capacity on off-peak days. This means a good 30-50% discount on vino!
